Winter 2007, BA271 Prerequisite Exam
Ground rules
-
Please read carefully--Your grade will be based on whether you
follow these instructions accurately.
-
Do not print this exam! You are to
work entirely from the screen -- not from paper.
-
Work carefully and check your work.
The pictures in this exam are implicit instructions -- make your work look
similar.
-
You may ask for help during the
exam. I will help clarify what you are to do, but I may decline to give you
pointers about how to do it.
-
You have 90 minutes to complete the
exam. You are responsible for finishing the exam and sending me the final email
message within 90 minutes. Unless you have a prior agreement from me, the
90-minute time clock began after you finished the BA271 Honor Code
agreement and began reading this page.
File management
-
Create new folders named /BA271/January inside your Classwork folder on
file://cob-storage/studentpdata. When you complete this step, you
should have a folder named P:/classwork/ba271/January.
-
Next, open this link
file://cob-storage.bus.oregonstate.edu/studentpdata/Sullivan/Public/ba271/Green
inside Windows Explorer (do not try to open this link with Monzilla's
FireFox) and then save each of the four files by coping them to your
/classwork/ba271/January folder. If you complete this step correctly, then one
of the files should be named P:/classwork/ba271/January/green.doc. You should
not have a file named P:/classwork/ba271/January/Green/Green.doc.
-
Delete the file named OldFile.txt.
-
Rename one of the files you just copied, January.htm, to have the name MyExam.htm.
Spreadsheet basics
-
Use Microsoft Excel to open
IncomeStmt.xls from the folder you created.
-
Build formulas and give formatting
commands so it looks just like this screen-captured image:

-
Note that the columns between F and N are
not visible because the window has been split into two window panes. If you do
not know how to do this -- and you cannot guess or figure it out from the help
system – then you may ask me about using window panes in Excel.
-
Change the information in the first row show your own name.
-
Use the figures in the Assumption Block at the bottom of the spreadsheet to
enter formulas to compute income for January through December. Do not enter values into the spreadsheet, use cell references
only. (Getting the right values doesn't isn't enough, entering the right
formulas is).
-
Use these accounting functions:
- T-Shirt
sales + Comic sales = Total Revenue
- Overhead
+ Salaries = Total Expenses
- Total
Revenue - Total Expenses = Net Profit Before Taxes
- Net
Before Taxes - Tax = Net Profit
-
The
tax is 0 if the net before taxes is negative. So, you will need to use a function to check this condition.
-
Do not change any numbers in the
assumption area. Thus, the numbers that appear in your worksheet will not be
identical with the numbers shown above.
-
Build formulas that copy well; that
is, use the $ character in the appropriate places.
-
Use the Chart Wizard in Excel to
build a 12-month column chart similar to the one shown in the word processing
document below; that is, make a column chart showing the increase of your net
profit over the 12 months (January through December, not including the total
column!) Be sure to include the column headings in your data range so that the
columns will be labeled correctly. Place the chart on the same worksheet as
your budget projection starting around row 26.
-
Give a File-Save As command to save the file with your Username name. For
example, if your Username name is Suldr123, then you would want to save the
file as p:\classwork\ba271\January\Suldr123.xls.
Word processing
-
Use Microsoft Word to open Green.doc from
the folder you created.
-
Edit Green.doc as necessary so it looks
like this:

-
Don't forget to adjust all the margins as
shown in the image above -- including the top margin.
-
Give a File-Save As command to save the file with your Username name. For
example, if your Username is SULDR123, then you would want to save the file
as P:\classwork\ba271\January\suldr123.doc.
E-mail basics
-
Compose an e-mail message to
Dave
Sullivan whose subject line says BA271, My Finished Exam
-
Attach the Microsoft Excel and Word
files you created to the e-mail message. These files should have names similar
to Name123.xls and Name123.doc, where you have inserted your Username name
instead of Name123.
-
Find Dave Sullivan so he can congratulate you on completing
the exam.
