MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

DESCRIPTION: Management Information Systems (3 credits) Application of computers to solve business problems, with an emphasis on the development and use of business information systems. The course assumes each student is already a competent user of various computer-based application programs such as word processing database management systems, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics. PREREQ: BA 271, 275, 340, 350, 357, 390, and senior standing. This class is not open to students who have taken or are taking BA 370 or BA 378.
REQUIRED TEXT: Principles of Information Systems, OSU Edition (7th) by Stair & Reynolds, Thomson.
READING ASSIGNMENTS & CHAPTER EXAMS:
A section of each chapter from the course text will be covered during class (see tentative class schedule). Be sure to complete the reading assignment before class and be prepared for the chapter exam (closed book), class exercises, and discussion during the lecture.

AGENDA -- Each class meeting will consist of:

Projects,
Case Studies, etc.-- Student presentations
· Appropriate break
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participate
in classroom discussions, case studies, projects, etc.
·
Complete (on
time) assigned readings from the textbook.
·
Analyze,
report (class presentation), and lead class discussion on assigned case
studies, group projects, etc.
·
Successful
completion of chapter exams.
EXAMINATIONS:
· Daily Chapter Exam—Students making class presentations, do not take the chapter exam for that day. Their exam score will be the same as their presentation score.

At Each Class Meeting è

Assigned
students will analyze, make a presentation, and lead the discussion on a
chapter topic (case study, group project, etc.). See Presentation Schedule for
assignment. Each student presentation
will be 4-6 minutes (which does not
include questions, dialogue with class) and will consist of:
a.) an overview of the case (sufficient for the
rest of the class to fully understand the issues);
b.) a discussion of the issues; and
c.) proposed solutions to any
problems/questions.

Students who
gave the previous day’s presentations, ask questions of or engage in discussion
with, the current day’s presenters.
