BA 396– Exercises/Project Components

Library Exercise

This exercise is to give you exposure to the various sources of information that are available at the library and also on line. Be advised that the challenge with any secondary data resource, especially those online, is determining the QUALITY of the information.

Note: we have a librarian that is devoted to business resources. For projects in your other business classes Ms. Mellinger could be a great resource.

Census Lookup Exercise

One of the best sources of information about consumers and/or households is the U.S. Census. The first major challenge with the Census is dealing with "information overload." The amount of information that is available on the Census website is amazing, and it can be a challenge to get to the information you want. The second challenge is understanding how the tables are organized so that you can get the numbers you need from the table. This exercise will give you experience with the second challenge.

Census Confidence Interval Exercise

In spite of the fact that we label the decennial Census of Population and Housing a "census," only a small part of the information actually comes from a "complete count." As a result, decision-makers who use Census data need to be able to calculate confidence intervals for the sample data. This exercise gives students practice in creating confidence intervals for Census data.

Questionnaire Design

It is quite easy to read the "rules" for questionnaire design in the text and listen to a lecture presentation. But creating a GOOD questionnaire that will lead to a GOOD dataset is a difficult task involving trial and error. This two-part exercise will give students some practice in questionnaire design .

Project Components

There are four components that form the project for this class. Directions for components 1 and 2 and components 3 and 4 are available for download. A set of worksheets is also needed for component 4.
