Buying and Selling Textbooks On-line

Note: I won't require Spring 2006 students to complete this activity, and I won't grade it this term -- but I strongly encourage you to read and consider it.

Most students use the OSU Bookstore to acquire or sell textbooks. I like this organization, and for a brick-and-mortar enterprise, it has done a super job while I have been at OSU. (Note: Starting with Winter term 2006, the OSU Bookstore has let students post free online classified ads to help make it easier to exchange textbooks among students on campus.) Nonetheless, students can often find much better prices if they are willing to shop on-line.

Since BA271 is all about using computers effectively, I want to encourage you to shop on-line and save money, either by buying textbooks at the beginning of the term, or by selling unwanted textbooks. For this reason, I’ve decided to created an graded activity this term: I’d like you to either buy or sell a textbook on-line and report the results to me.

I want to make this activity as straightforward as possible. Simply buy or sell a textbook online. Then fill out the Buying and Selling Textbooks Online Survey (available at https://surveys.bus.oregonstate.edu/BsgSurvey2_0/main.aspx?SurveyID=1105&cmd=survey) before noon on the fifth Friday of the term. This survey will ask basic questions about your online transaction such as the book's title, the website you used, and the sales or purchase price.

Assuming all goes well, you should see this confirmation page when you complete the survey:

BA271 -- Buying and Selling Textbooks On-line

Confirmation Page

Thank you ... for filling out the BA271 -- Buying and Selling Textbooks On-line Survey. It will help me learn more about the on-line habits and skills of my students.

Assuming that you completed the survey with plausible answers before the activity's due date, you just earned 10 points associated with this class.

  -- Dave Sullivan

Ideas about BA271's Textbook

Textbooks no longer seem like the best way to communicate ideas about computing. They are generally out-of-date by the time they are published, and better sources of information are often available for free on the web. For this reason, we will not use a printed textbook for the first half of the term. We will use the BA271 website (available at http://classes.bus.oregonstate.edu/ba271) supplemented by links to various other websites instead.

For the second half of the term, when we are studying Microsoft Access, we will have a required textbook: Microsoft Office Access 2003, Introductory, written by Joseph Adamski and Kathleen Finnegan,  published by Course Technology (Thomson Learning) on December 11, 2003. Note that this is not the most current version of the textbook. In fact, this book is no longer in print.  We've been using the book for about three years, and it does a good job of explaining how to use Microsoft Access, so I see no reason to stop using it simply because the publisher no longer wants to print and sell new copies.

The most current version has different exercises -- but all the same basic instructions about how to use Microsoft Access. It sells for a bunch more than the older version, so I stuck with the older version.

Since this book is no longer in print, you cannot count on the OSU Bookstore having a copy. As of March 21, 2006, the OSU Bookstore was buying used copies of the book for $5, and it was selling them for $6 -- but they only had 30 copies in stock. Since there will be 200 students in BA271 next term, I'm hoping students from the last few terms will cough up more copies.

The easiest way to acquire this book will be to walk over to the OSU Bookstore and purchase either a new copy (for Spring term 2006, the price is $6 for a used copy. But the OSU Bookstore does not have enough copies for everyone. So if you find it is out of stock when you drop by, then I recommend reading the Syllabus page for other strategies to buy the book.

Several final thoughts:

  1. Make sure you are buying the right book!!! Many textbooks have similar sounding versions that have wildly different prices. While the 12th edition of an Economics textbook may be cheap, if your class requires the 13th edition, then the 12th edition may have all the wrong exercises.
  2. Don't believe everything you read or see on the web. Online fraud is more common than fraud when dealing with a brick-and-mortar bookstore. Check out the online reputation of the people or organizations you will be dealing with. Remember to factor in the costs of shipping and the delays in completing the transaction when you think about engaging in online transactions.
  3. Planning ahead makes a lot of sense when buying textbooks online. If you wait until the term has already started, the books you order are unlikely to arrive in time, and the books you offer to sell may go without buyers because students elsewhere have already made other purchases.
  4. If you list a textbook for sale at an online website, and it hasn't actually sold -- that will meet the requirements of this Buying and Selling Textbooks Online exercise.
  5. Any online buying or selling activity that deals with textbooks which occurs after March 1, 2006 qualifies for this exercise.
  6. Using an online OSU Bookstore Classified Ad to buy or sell a textbook qualifies for this activity.
  7. I'd like your thoughts about whether this activity was useful and how it might be improved next term.

  -- Dave Sullivan

Here are comments from students who completed this activity during Winter 2006.
Note:
this list is unedited and includes every comment made by anyone who completed the activity. Collectively, the entries suggest these students save around $3,800 by buying and selling textbook on-line.

I would guess it is about that. It is a good idea to buy textbooks online. I prefer my method of knowing enough people that the bookstore is a faint memory. I like to capitalize on the fact that students will not get much money back from the bookstore if they sell it back. I get my schedule and go to book buyback looking for a printed list of books my friends and I need. It helps to get online and find the books to see what you could get them for and what they look like so that you can have beeter luck approaching people earlier.

I happened to be looking at the Amazon.com page for books before class started, on the off chance that they would have the above listed book for my grad. class. Low and behold they did. I was for sale from somebody named virtualbookbin and was selling out of Oregon. I called the Book Bin in Corvallis, hoping that it was them and that they would let me come and purchase it from them directly. I recommend for students in the Corvallis area to call the Book Bin, because they might sell you the text that you need minus the commission that Amazon charges. Just another option!

Searching for the correct book was more challenging than going to the bookstore and seeing it on the shelf but it is worth it to save 18.00 had it only been 5.00 it wouldn't have been worth it. At the OSU bookstore you know you got the correct book and if you are already on campus then it is more efficient to just purchase the book rather than spending an hour searching the net for each book to save a few dollars.

I am very glad I bought this book online for this assignment. Before this term I always went to the bookstore to buy my books, I never considered buying them online. In this transaction I had to keep checking to see if I was the highest bidder. In the end I won the book and saved about 50% of the cost the book was being sold for at the bookstore. Next term I will probably try to buy my books online, but I will order them in more advance than I did for this term. (I ordered this book less than a week before the start of the term, so it wasn't here when classes started.)
