BA469: STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
[Syllabus for
Dave Gobeli’s sections]
Professor Dave Gobeli, Fall 2006
Bexell 430, 737-3692,
Strategic Management (aka Business
Policy) examines performance, strategy formulation and implementation issues
from a general manager’s viewpoint, providing an integrative framework for the
functional business areas you have already studied. Those pursuing careers in general management,
entrepreneurship, or functional specialties will find this course valuable in
understanding what makes organizations successful or not.
Learning Objectives
The general purpose of this course
is to develop knowledge and skills for analyzing and improving organizational
performance. At the end of this course,
you will have (1) analyzed actual organizations with a strategic planning
process framework; (2) formulated business strategies and associated
implementation plans; (3) reviewed and applied knowledge from previous courses;
and (4) strengthened your business communication skills through writing,
presentations and discussion. Note that
BA 469 is designated as a Writing Intensive Course.
Learning Activities
Activities include lectures, class
discussions, case presentations, written case summaries, and quizzes. Lectures will not repeat the assigned
readings, but rather will highlight and build upon them, so you must review
basic concepts before class. Case
analyses build upon and hence require application of relevant concepts from the
text and supplemental topics, as well as from previous specialty courses (e.g.,
marketing, finance, operations, MIS).
Grading
The grading will be based on the
following assignments and possible points.
A grade of A (outstanding work) requires 90% of the possible points, B
(solid work) requires 80%, C (just following instructions) requires 70%, and so
on. Plus and minus grades are +/- 3%
from the base grades (e.g., B+ is 83% and C- is 67%). Note that relevant assignments are graded
on a curve.
