BA 471 - MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Fall 2007 - Sullivan (Sections 1 and 3)
Information technology (IT) has been
transforming business operations for decades, and the pace of change is only
increasing. To be successful in the "information age," organizations will need
people who are knowledgeable about both the opportunities and the pitfalls
associated with IT. BA 471 has been designed to help OSU business students
better understand IT, how organizations may tap the potential benefits of IT,
and reduce the risks associated with IT. For an organization to thrive in
today’s business environment, managers and functional specialists in all areas –
finance, accounting, marketing, production and operations management, human
resources, and international business must perform their jobs effectively and
efficiently. The BA471 course helps students from different options understand
that IT plays a major role in supporting all organizational personnel regardless
of their functional areas. The course helps students understand that IT
provides the tools that enable all organizational personnel to solve complex
problems and to capitalize on opportunities that contribute to the success of an
organization.
Announcements
November 25th: One of your colleagues asks:
"Is the [data
modeling] project due during class tomorrow?"
My reply: Yes, you should turn it in during class tomorrow.
November 7th: In class today, we are likely to look at
these Visio drawings that capture much of the same information that we
struggled with on Monday.
November 5,
2007: I finished grading the midterm exams. Here is a graph showing the
distribution of scores across both class sections on the exam.
November 2, 2007: Midterm Exam ideas.
I've found and printed all the exams (they were scattered in many hard to
find network locations). This weekend I expect to spend a lot of time reading
and evaluating answers. Hopefully I will be able to hand out results on Monday.
October 24, 2007: I've extended the ideas somewhat in the
Exams page ...
October 9, 2007: On Wednesday in class, I will discuss a bit about
the fair use provisions of copyright law and its implications on how we
assemble reading lists. I will base this discussion in large part on the
following two articles:
September 28, 2007: I used all the information you gave me on
Wednesday to put people into groups, and to assign groups to presentation
topics. You can see the result at the bottom of the
Group Presentation page.
September 24, 2007: I will use this location to make announcements
throughout the term, so you should check this location whenever you arrive
at the BA471 website.
Today I have several requests to make:
- Spend time examining this website. Become comfortable with its
organization and carefully read the syllabus.
- Come prepared to the September 26th class by completing the
Week 1, Day 2 Activities.
- Make sure you feel comfortable using the college's email system. I
will periodically send email to your College of Business mailbox. For
example, I will send you feedback about assignments, exams and other
grading issues at this location.
- If you do not plan on checking this mailbox frequently, learn how to forward messages automatically from it to the mailbox you actually check for incoming mail (such as a hotmail account or your
university-provided ORST mailbox).
- I will send everyone in class a "Welcome to BA471" message
later today. Verify that you receive this
message. If you have difficulty finding and reading the "Welcome to
BA471" message, make sure you attend a help session or drop by my
office. Taking this class without being connected to email
properly would be like wearing sunglasses while driving at night.
