ISO files

Wikipedia’s definition:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_image

ISO image (.iso) is a file format that is used for CD/DVD burning software.  The image contains all the files that are ready to be burnt onto a CD.  Simply, think of a ZIP file.  All the files are compressed into one .zip file.  They just need to be extracted.  An ISO image works the same way.  Most CD/DVD authoring utilities can deal with ISO images by copying them onto CD/DVD media.

There are also programs that can virtually "mount" the ISO image so the image can run on a computer without having to burn it onto a CD/DVD.  Programs such as Daemon Tools create those virtual drives to mount ISO images.    Daemon Tools is free to download at: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php
