REQUIRED MATERIAL:
Text - Beatty/Samuelson BUSINESS LAW I. This is a
custom text specifically produced for this course as a way to hold down book
costs. There is a study guide available
for use with this text. Any additional
material will be provided in class or on the black board web site for this
course.
COURSE GOALS: Students are expected to:
1- come to understand the legal environment of
business including the structure and functioning of the of the judicial,
legislative and administrative systems,
2- be able to apply business law concepts to
business problems including tort, contract and criminal law issues,
3- develop the ability to critically analyze current
legal proceedings and issues and relate them to material covered in class,
4- acquire an ability to analyze current cases and
relate the rules of those cases to the management of modern business
enterprises,
5- acquire an understanding of the concept of
sustainability and sustainable business practices,
6- come to understand the legal implications of the
ethical rules and social responsibilities of modern businesses.
CLASS PREPARATION:
You are expected to have read the material for class
lectures before the lecture is presented. Prior to each class a listing of the
lecture topics for that day will be posted in the course documents section of
the blackboard web site for this course.
COURSE QUIZZES AND FINAL EXAM:
There will be nine objective quizzes which will
comprise 70% of your course grade. These quizzes will combine true or false and
multiple choice questions based on the reading and lecture material presented
since the last quiz. The quizzes
normally will take about twenty minutes at the end of the Thursday class
meetings. No make up quizzes will be offered but the two lowest quiz scores
will be dropped from your final grade calculation. There will be a comprehensive, objective
final exam that will comprise 30% of your final grade. You will be permitted to bring one hand
written note card for use on the final exam only.
GRADING:
The final grade for this course is based on a plus
and minus scale. For example; 80% to 82%
is a B-, 83% to 87% is a B and 88% to 89% is a B+. Partial percentage scores
will be rounded up if they reach the .6% level. Hence and 82.6% will be
considered an 83% for purposes of your final grade. There is no curve or extra credit in this
course.
DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS:
Students with accommodations approved by the
Services for Students with Disabilities Office are responsible for contacting
the instructor prior to or during the first week of classes to discuss appropriate
accommodations.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Academic dishonesty is using another’s work or
aiding another in doing so .Any academic dishonesty will be dealt with as per
the rules stated in the student handbook.

Week 6 = Chapters 10 - 14 - quiz on Thursday
Week 7 = Chapters 15, 17, 18 - quiz on Thursday
Week 8 = Chapters 19 & 21 - on line quiz on
Thursday - no class on May 22
Week 9 = Chapters 21 & 22 - quiz on Thursday
Week 10 = Chapters 28 & 29 - quiz on Thursday
FINAL EXAM = Wed. June 11 -12:00 p.m. - in Classroom
CHEAP ADVICE:
Should you find yourself floundering in this course
the time to do something about it is as soon as you realize you are having a
problem. Do stop by the office to discuss the problem - often there are
identifiable methods that can help your performance. What ever you do - don’t
wait till the end of the quarter.
