BA 471
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION
SYSTEMS
Spring 2008
INSTRUCTOR:
OFFICE HOURS: Tues
12-1 Weds 1-2
Thur 3-4 and by appointment
DESCRIPTION: Management Information Systems (3 credits; lecture 3 hours/week) Application of computers to solve business problems, with an emphasis on the development and use of business information systems. The course assumes each student is already a competent user of various computer-based application programs such as word processing database management systems, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics. PREREQ: BA 271, 275, 340, 350, 357, 390, and senior standing. This class is not open to students who have taken or are taking BA 370 or BA 378.
“Information technology
(IT) has been transforming business operations for decades, and the pace of
change is only increasing. To be successful in the "information
age," organizations will need people who are knowledgeable about both the
opportunities and the pitfalls associated with IT. BA 471 has been
designed to help OSU business students better understand IT, how organizations
may tap the potential benefits of IT, and reduce the risks associated with
IT. For an organization to thrive in today’s business environment,
managers and functional specialists in all areas – finance, accounting,
marketing, production and operations management, human resources, and
international business must perform their jobs effectively and
efficiently. The BA471 course helps students from different options
understand that IT plays a major role in supporting all organizational
personnel regardless of their functional areas. The course helps students
understand that IT provides the tools that enable all organizational personnel
to solve complex problems and to capitalize on opportunities that contribute to
the success of an organization.” --- Dr.
David Sullivan,

Important
Matters
·
Students with
Disabilities
Accommodations are collaborative efforts
between students, faculty and Disability Access Services (DAS). Students with accommodations
approved through DAS are responsible for contacting the faculty member in
charge of the course prior to or during the first week of the term to discuss
accommodations. Students who believe they are eligible for accommodations but
who have not yet obtained approval through DAS should contact DAS immediately
at 737-4098.
·
Student Conduct
Be sure to review the university policy academic issues and student conduct č http://oregonstate.edu/admin/stucon/achon.htm
Note:
If you have not had your COB picture taken or if it is “out-dated”, be
sure to have it taken by the COB electronic photo staff, before the end of the
first week of classes. They are located in the COB Computer Lab,
basement of Bexell Hall.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
This syllabus is a guide, not a contract, and therefore may be changed
as necessary. If changes are made, I
will announce and discuss them in class.
